About the exam

AB-730 certifies that you can put Microsoft 365 Copilot to work on ordinary business tasks — prompting it, judging what comes back, drafting from it and summarising with it — without writing code or building AI applications. The blueprint covers three areas: how generative AI behaves across Microsoft 365 and what shapes its answers; prompts, chats and agents; and the drafting and analysis that follows.

It is written for people who already spend their day in Outlook, Word, Teams, PowerPoint and Excel — analysts, managers and specialists who want AI to shorten routine work rather than to build something new. Microsoft files the credential under its Administrator and Business User roles.

A team assistant at a veterinary group wants help building a short staff survey and analysing the answers. Which Copilot experience is designed for that task?

AlexFull explanation from Alex

The Copilot experiences are deliberately app-shaped: each one does what its host application is for, which is why choosing the right app matters more than writing a clever prompt. Forms is the survey, quiz and poll tool, so its Copilot drafts questions, reviews them, helps send the form and analyses the responses that come back. Whiteboard is for ideation, so its Copilot generates, categorises and summarises ideas. The Clipchamp video player Copilot works on videos that have a transcript, producing summaries, answering questions and identifying calls to action. OneDrive Copilot works across stored documents, extracting information, comparing differences and summarising files. Learning the map saves colleagues from trying to force one experience to do another's job. Exam tip: match the task to the app that owns the artefact.

Draft and analyze business content by using AI2 / 5

A team lead schedules a meeting from a short email thread with Copilot in Outlook, and no agenda appears in the invitation at all. Which explanation is consistent with Microsoft's documentation?

AlexFull explanation from Alex

An empty agenda field is a signal about the source material rather than a fault in the feature. Copilot builds the agenda out of what the thread actually says, so a conversation that never reached a decision or a next step gives it nothing to structure a meeting around. A second, quieter reason is confidentiality: content from confidential or restricted messages is excluded, so a thread that looks substantial to a human can still be thin from Copilot's point of view. Neither the meeting length nor the Facilitator agent has any bearing on whether an agenda is drafted at this stage, although Facilitator will later scan the invite for an agenda once the meeting starts. The documented remedy is straightforward: prompt Copilot to draft one, naming the specific topics and goals you want covered, because a vague request produces a generic outline. Exam tip: thin thread means no agenda, and the fix is a specific Draft with Copilot prompt.

Manage prompts and conversations by using AI3 / 5

An adoption manager at an energy utility has to report to a governance board on how prompt sharing is spreading through the organization. Which data does Microsoft document as available to admins through the analytics and reporting tools for Prompt Gallery?

AlexFull explanation from Alex

Prompt sharing produces two kinds of signal, and the documentation is specific about which ones an admin can see. At user level, an admin can look at the prompts a specific person saved, liked and shared, which shows who is actually building a personal library rather than just experimenting. At team level, an admin can see the prompts shared with a specific team, which is the measure that matters for adoption because a prompt shared into a team reaches everyone in it. Both can be exported for reporting. What the tooling is not is a transcript store: it reports on prompt objects and engagement with them, not on the conversations they generated. Exam tip: when a question asks what admins can measure about prompts, think about the prompt artefacts and their sharing, not about response content.

A governance committee at a water utility wants to cite a Microsoft Application card in its internal AI risk file, and first asks what these cards are for. Which statement is correct?

AlexFull explanation from Alex

Transparency documentation is one of the ways a vendor operationalises responsible AI commitments. An Application card describes an AI application, a Platform card describes an AI platform service, and both set out capabilities, intended uses and limitations in language a deploying organisation can act on. That makes them the natural starting point for an internal risk assessment: they tell you what the system is designed to do, what choices you as the deployer control, and where the boundaries are. They are explicitly not a certification, a licence sheet or an audit record. Reading one before rollout is what lets a governance committee decide whether a use case falls inside the intended envelope. Exam tip: cards answer what the system is for and where it stops, not who is licensed or who did what.

A human resources lead with no development background wants an agent for herself and three colleagues, built quickly in natural language from onboarding material the team already has. Which tool matches that need?

AlexFull explanation from Alex

Both Agent Builder and Copilot Studio produce agents, but they serve different audiences and that is the distinction the exam cares about. Agent Builder lives inside Copilot and is aimed at someone who wants a working agent for themselves or a handful of colleagues, described in plain language and grounded in content the team already keeps. Copilot Studio is the choice when the agent serves a broad audience, needs multi-step workflows, or has to integrate with other systems. Developers who need deeper integration reach for the agents software development kit instead. Picking the heavier tool for a small need slows the first success without improving it. Exam tip: read the size of the audience and the complexity of the workflow before you pick a tool.

What's on the exam

Prompt and conversation work carries the most weight at 35–40%, and it is where the exam gets specific: not only phrasing a request well, but storing it, putting it on a timetable, handing it to a colleague, and knowing when a template-built agent beats one more chat. The two flanking areas sit at 25–30% each. One asks what Copilot can see, why the same request returns something different when its surroundings change, and which check catches a fabricated citation before it reaches a report. The other is output work: first drafts, summaries an executive will read, figures carried between Office apps, and meetings and shared pages that keep a usable record afterwards.

Understand generative AI fundamentals25–30%

The conceptual base: what Copilot may reach for inside a tenant, how permissions and the file, web or app context around a request shape what comes back, where a chat surface ends and a purpose-built agent begins, and the checking habits that stop a fabricated or injected answer from reaching a business decision.

Manage prompts and conversations by using AI35–40%

The heaviest and most procedural area: phrasing a request so it names the material it should draw on, keeping a prompt where colleagues can reuse it or run it on a timetable, curating past chats, and standing an agent up from a template with the knowledge, settings and audience it needs.

≈ 6 h
Draft and analyze business content by using AI25–30%

Applied output work: turning a brief into a first draft, reshaping one document into another, condensing a long file into something a decision-maker will actually read, carrying figures between Office apps, and putting Copilot to work around meetings and shared pages.

Exam format and question types

Microsoft schedules AB-730 for 45 minutes and publishes no count for this exam; across its certification exams the usual load is 40–60 questions. Scores run on a scale of 1 to 1,000 and 700 passes.

Expect mostly single-answer items with a solid share of multi-answer ones, plus drag-and-drop, ordered lists and dropdown-driven screens. Microsoft does not say in advance which formats any one exam uses; it demonstrates the whole set in a public sandbox instead. Unscored trial items are mixed in and are never marked as such, so answer everything. You may break, but the clock keeps running and nothing you have already seen comes back.

Common pitfalls

Topics to review: AB-730

  1. 01Chat versus agent

Reaching for a purpose-built agent where a plain chat would do, or the reverse; the exam asks when a template-built, knowledge-scoped agent earns its keep.

  2. 02Permission inheritance

Assuming Copilot widens what someone can reach — it stays inside the access they already hold, so a surprising result usually points at the permissions, not the model.

  3. 03Context changes the answer

Missing that an identical request returns different output depending on the open app, the attached file, and whether web results are in play.

  4. 04Choosing the right check

Applying human review where a citation check is the correct control, or skipping verification on output that leaves the organisation.

  5. 05Prompt lifecycle

Knowing how to phrase a request but not how to store, schedule and hand it on — the blueprint asks for all four.

  6. 06Notebooks versus pages

Confusing where a conversation is kept for later with where colleagues work on the output together.
