AZ-204 retires in eight days, and this one is different from the other Azure retirements this year.
AZ-500 got SC-500. AI-102 got AI-103. AZ-204 gets nothing. Microsoft’s retirement notice on the Azure Developer Associate page links to a general blog post about AI skills, not to a replacement exam.
That changes the question. It isn’t “which exam do I switch to.” It’s “is a credential with no future still worth eight days of my life.”
What Retires, Exactly
More than the exam.
From the Azure Developer Associate certification page:
This certification, related exam, and renewal assessments will retire on July 31, 2026. You will no longer be able to earn or renew this certification after this date.
Three things, not one: the AZ-204 exam, the Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate certification, and the renewal assessments. The study guide puts the cutoff at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time on July 31.
The renewal piece is the one people miss. Microsoft associate certifications expire 12 months after you pass, and you normally keep them current for free through an online renewal assessment. That assessment retires with the exam.
So if you pass on July 30, you hold Azure Developer Associate until roughly July 2027, and then it lapses. Permanently. There is no renewal path and no successor exam to roll into. You are buying a credential with a known expiry date and no extension.
That is not automatically a bad deal. It just needs to be a deliberate one.
The Consequence Almost Nobody Mentions
Azure Developer Associate is a prerequisite for an expert certification.
To earn Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert, you need AZ-400 plus one of two associate certifications: Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate.
After July 31, that “one of two” becomes one of one. The developer route into AZ-400 closes and everyone goes through AZ-104 instead. If that is your new path, our AZ-104 study guide is the place to start.
If your plan was AZ-204 now and AZ-400 later, you have a real decision this week:
- Pass AZ-204 before July 31 and your DevOps Engineer Expert prerequisite is satisfied. Microsoft’s own footnote on the certification page is explicit: complete the exam before the retirement date and it still counts toward the certification.
- Miss it and you need AZ-104 first, which is a different exam with different material.
AZ-400 and AZ-305 both carry no retirement notice as of today, so the expert tier itself is not going anywhere. Only the developer door into it is.
Who Should Still Take It
Take it if you are close and it does something concrete for you:
- You are most of the way through the material and can realistically sit it this month.
- You want the AZ-400 prerequisite locked in without detouring through AZ-104.
- A job requirement, promotion, or partner-competency box needs the title on record in the next 12 months.
Skip it if:
- You would be starting from scratch this week. AZ-204 assumes at least two years of programming experience and proficiency with the Azure SDKs. Eight days is not a study plan, it is a gamble with a real exam fee.
- You want a credential you can keep current. This one cannot be kept current.
- You already hold AZ-104. Your AZ-400 path is already open and AZ-204 adds a lapsing badge, not a new door.
If You Are Sitting It, Here Is Where the Marks Are

You get 100 minutes and need 700 to pass.
Compute and the services/messaging domain are over half the exam between them. That means Container Apps, App Service deployment slots and autoscaling, and Functions triggers and bindings on one side, and API Management policies, Event Grid, Event Hubs, Service Bus and Queue Storage on the other. Monitoring is 5–10%, so Application Insights is worth knowing but not worth a third of your remaining week.
If you are triaging eight days, work the top two domains until they are solid and accept that a weak monitoring answer costs you very little.
The Honest Summary
AZ-204 is still a real exam measuring real skills, and passing it before July 31 earns a certification that still unlocks AZ-400. None of that is diminished by the retirement.
What is diminished is the shelf life. Twelve months, then gone, with nothing to move to.
Decide on that basis rather than on the countdown. Deadline pressure is a bad reason to book an exam you were not otherwise ready for.
